Winners Crowned In Wet Season Opener

By Cole Sorenson

The 2016 season got off to a wet start Saturday night, with the track playing host to the LORDCO Auto Parts Demo Series, the debut of the Nexx Financial Claimers, and Richlock Rentals Capital Drift. Rain started to fall midway through qualifying, but it failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the large crowd gathered, or the racers.

The Mini Figure 8’s saw 13 cars line up for the main event, with the field led to the green by Aneil Pallan and Jules Keir. Sam Lagan shot out to an early lead, followed in hot pursuit by Kyle Rizok. On lap 10, Rizok bumped his way past Lagan for the lead, and started to distance himself from the pack. With 7 laps to go, Rizok lost a tire, and was forced to pit, handing the lead over to Brandon Young. Young would go on to win the race, followed by Sam Lagan, Alex Carey, Daryn Cahill, and Kyle Rizok. The trophy dash win went to Sam Lagan, with Rhett Szevics and Brandon Young taking the heat race wins.

7 Cars lined up for the green flag in the Nexx Financial Claimers, with Curtis Boyce and Nathan Mellors leading the field to the green. Mellors and Boyce would battle side by side for several laps, before Mellors dropped back, allowing Boyce to fight for the lead with Bailey Walker. Walker would pass Boyce with 5 laps to go, and held off Kevin Knight, Curtis Boyce, Robin Trotter, and Nathan Mellors for the win. The trophy dash win went to Robin Trotter, and the heat race win went to Nathan Mellors.

The Bombers had 19 cars start the main event, with the field led to the green by Trevor Cannon and Tony Kambo. Kambo grabbed the lead off the start, but was quickly passed by Mike Dionne and Stuart Campbell for first and second respectively. Campbell would grab the lead on the next lap, and would fight with Dionne until lap 16, when Bill Gallacher Jr. managed to pass both Dionne and Campbell for the lead. Trevor Cannon spun out with 7 laps to go, bringing out the caution. On the restart, Bill Gallacher Sr. managed to work his way up to second, before passing his son for the lead with 4 laps to go. Gallacher Sr. would go on to win, followed by Bill Gallacher Jr., Mike Dionne, Terry Leerholm, and Rich Gerhardt. The trophy dash win went to Terry Leerholm, with heat race victories going to Tony Kambo and Bill Gallacher Jr.

The Demo Cars and Trucks rounded out the action, with Pete Brozik and Jake Burns leading the field to the green. Several vehicles got together in turn one, leaving George Haywood without a rear wheel, and leading to a total restart. Jim Young would grab the lead, followed in hot pursuit by son Brandon in the 3 truck. On lap number 3 the caution came out again for the stopped car of Theron MacDonald. On the restart Kenny Baker moved into second, before muscling Jim Young out of the way for the lead. Baker would then tangle with the lapped truck of Ashton Campbell, allowing Jaime Morgan to grab the lead. Morgan would go onto win, followed by Kenny Baker, Craig Holfeld, Jim Young, and Gerry Bernard. Trophy dash wins went to Jaime Morgan and Brandon Young, with heat race wins going to Kenny Baker and George Haywood.

The next race at Western Speedway is April 30th, for the Vapour Solutions Night at the Races, with the Richlock Rentals Non Winged Sprint Cars, Galaxy Motors Stock Cars, IMS4 Mini Stocks, Island Dwarf Cars, and the OTRA. Gates open at 4:30, qualifying at 5:30, and racing at 6:30.
