Kuhn Sweeps Twin 50's

by Cole Sorenson

This past weekend at Western Speedway featured the Keg Late Models, Galaxy Motors Stock Cars, and the Sooke Disposal Mini Stocks for the CHEK News Hometown Heroes Night. The evening also featured a hero’s recognition ceremony.

The first main event of the evening was for the Keg Late Models, Ray Anderosov and Tony Grant leading the field to the green flag. The first caution would come out on lap thirteen for Tim Graham, who spun in turn three. Once the race went back to green, Geoff Morris snatched the top spot, with Brandon Carlson slotting into second. On lap nineteen, the caution would come out for Shaun Ross, who spun going into turn three. When the caution came out, Geoff Morris checked up, but Brandon Carlson couldn’t slow enough and got into the back of the 52 car, sending the leader spinning and putting both cars to the tail of the field. Bob Kuhn would inherit the race lead, and would pull away to snatch his first win in a Late Model. Geoff Morris drove back up to second, with Aaron Wilkie, Tim Graham, and Wes Mader rounding out the top five.

The next main event of the evening was for the Sooke Disposal Mini Stocks, with Austin Cockerill and Bailey Meeres starting on pole. Joey Reaume jumped out to an early lead in the 7 car, and pulled away from the field. On lap nineteen, Reaume would spin in oil from Ryan Patterson’s car, with Stu Ferguson spinning the next lap to bring out the yellow. Through the chaos, Daryl Cahill emerged as the race leader, with Alex Mouner in hot pursuit. Jason Day would take over second with five laps to go, and would close the gap on Cahill to just two car lengths, but ultimately would come up short. Cahill would cross the line ahead of Jason Day, Alex Mouner, Jeremy Waksel, and Stu Ferguson. Dash wins went to Joey Reaume and Daryl Cahill, with heat race wins going to Jason Day and Joey Reaume.

The Galaxy Motors Stock Cars were up next for their main event, with Wayne “The Train” Hart leading the field to the green for fifty laps. Brendan Moore would take the lead on lap fifteen, with Chris McInerney in second. McInerney would pass Moore for the lead on lap twenty, placing him at the head of the field for the competition caution at the halfway point. It was decided by officials and drivers that at the halfway point the top four cars would be inverted, which gave Wayne “The Train” Hart the lead for the restart. Brendan Moore would make a move on the outside on lap twenty seven for the lead, and checked out on the rest of the field to capture his second main event win of the season. Dash wins went to Ronnie Kiefert and Kyle Cottam, with the heat race win going to Dave Reside.

The Late Models were back for their second main event of the evening, with Ray Anderosov and Tony Grant leading the field to the green. It would take three attempts to start the main, and when it got going, Anderosov would lead early on, with Bob Kuhn picking his way to second from the tail of the field. Kuhn would make the pass for the lead on lap seven, and would lead the rest of the main event, which had seven caution flags, and only had six cars finish the main event. Brandon Carlson, Wes Mader, Mike Soppitt, and Shaun Ross rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Brandon Carlson and Geoff Morris.

The next race at Western Speedway is July 22nd for the Seawings Express Fan Appreciation Night, featuring free admission, as well the Galaxy Motors Stock Cars, Sooke Disposal Mini Stocks, Dwarf Cars, Old Timers, Bombers, Claimers, Hornets, and Go Karts.
