By Cole Sorenson,
This past Saturday night, Western Speedway played host to the Millstone Manufacturing night at the Races, featuring the Keg Steakhouse and Bar Late Models, Galaxy Motors Stock Cars, Sooke Disposal Mini Stocks, OTRA, and the Island Dwarf Cars. A good crowd was on hand despite the cold weather and off and on showers.
The first main event of the evening was for the Keg Steakhouse and Bar Late Models, with Tony Grant starting on pole. Kevin Knight started on the outside of the front row, and proceeded to drive away from the field, developing a half track lead before lap twenty. On lap twenty, the caution would come out for Jason Frost, who spun after making contact with Tim Graham in the 27 car. On the restart, Knight would once again pull away from the field, with Brandon Carlson slotting into second. Carlson would pass Knight for the lead on lap thirty, but a late race caution for Brent morris and Mike Soppitt would set up a restart with three laps to go. Carlson would hold off a hard charging Aaron Wilkie for the main event win, with Tom Berrow, Kevin Knight, and Bob Kuhn rounding out the top five.
The second main event of the evening was for the Island Dwarf Cars, with Derrick Street and Stu Hopewell making up the front row. Street would nab the early advantage, leading the first five laps before being passed by Tovay Helgesen. Just three laps later, Helgesen would be passed by Brad Scafe, who charged to the lead from the 12th starting spot. Scafe would hold off a hard charging Brad Struck for his first main event win in the Dwarf Cars. Derrick Street, Weston Lane, and Jeremy Stevens rounded out the top five. The dash and heat race one went to Brad Struck, with the other heat race going to Kyle Kennedy.
The next main event of the evening was for the Mini Stocks, with Matt Szauer and Alex Mouner leading the charge. Mouner would grab the lead early on, with Caleb Van Bree, Daryl Cahill and Ryan Patterson fighting for second on back. Mouner would lead all twenty laps for his first main event win of the season, with Caleb Van Bree finishing second after contact with Ryan Patterson. Patterson was black flagged and was dropped to the tail of the field. Matt Szauer, Daryl Cahill, and Jason Day rounded out the top five. The dash win went to Caleb Van Bree, with the heat race win going to Alex Mouner.
The Old Timers were up next, with a big field of nineteen cars coming out for the third race of the season. Andy Muir and Larry Joyce led the field to the green, with Joyce leading the opening five laps. Troy Tarbuck would make a move for the lead, with George Jenson and Rob Morneau in hot pursuit. Jenson would make a daring three wide pass going into turn one on the next lap, bouncing off Tarbuck’s left front wheel, and into the lead. From there on, Jenson would lead the rest of the way, racking up his third main event of the season. Rob Morneau, Troy Tarbuck, Kail Beck, and Chris Miller rounded out the top five. The dash win went to Chris Hamber, with Tyler Clough and George Jenson claiming heat race wins.
The next main event of the evening was for the Galaxy Motors Stock Cars, with Richard Milne and Rhett Smith making up the front row. Smith would jump out front early on, before being passed by Brendan Moore on lap seven. Moore would fend off a strong charge from fast qualifier Chris McInerney to snatch his first win of the season, with Dave Reside, Kyle Cottam, and Wayne “The Train” Hart rounding out the top five. The dash win went to Dave Reside, with Mark Lockhart and Wayne Hart claiming heat race wins.
The last main event of the evening was the second Twin 50 for the Late Models, with Jason Frost and Mike Soppitt starting on the front row. Soppitt led the opening eight laps, before being passed by rookie Tim Graham. Graham would lead the rest of the main event, with Geoff Morris charging up to second from deep in the field. Aaron Wilkie, Mike Soppitt, and Brandon Carlson rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Jason Frost and Kevin Knight.
The next race at Western Speedway is for the Nichol Marine Night at the Races, on June 24th, featuring the LORDCO Auto Parts Demo Series, Bombers, Mini Figure 8’s and the Loan Ranger Financial Claimers.
